Book Power Clubs  |  College Prep Program  |  Denise McCoy Legacy Award  |  Today's Teens - Tomorrow's Leaders

Book Power Clubs

The Book Power Clubs have been running since 1996 at Arbor Hill Elementary School, and 2005 at Giffen Elementary School (both schools are in the Albany City School District).

Both programs serve third graders (as they prepare for the New York State 4th Grade Language Arts Exam); and run one day, after school, per week.

Volunteers come in and work one-on-one with students on planned topics each week, improving reading skills, making reading enjoyable and giving the students books to own. If you are interested in volunteering with the Book Power Club, please contact Amber Marino at 438-2039.

College Prep Program

High School students in the 15-LOVE program are eligible to participate in the College Prep Program. Through group meetings and one-on-one sessions, the students in the College Prep Program work through a four-year curriculum that:

- helps freshmen determine their talents and interests

- aids sophomores in exploring careers that match their talents, interests and personel goals

- assists juniors in locating colleges that have the programs of study needed for their career goals and at which they would flourish

- guides seniors by providing structure and motivation during the college application and financial aid processes

The College Prep Program is run by Maxine Brisport, 15-LOVE's Education Director.  Her primary duties are the College Prep and Leadership Training Programs. Maxine is a dedicated and compassionate School Psychologist who is eager and motivated to participate in community based programs to enhance the academic and postsecondary outcome of inner city students.

Interested in helping kids with the college admissions process?  15-LOVE is currently looking for volunteers that are interested in helping guide kids through the process of college admissions (from SAT's all the way down to choosing a college major).  If you are interested or would like some more information, contact 15-LOVE at 438-2039.

Denise McCoy Legacy Award

Established in 2005, the Denise McCoy Legacy Award honors the author of the previous year’s most humorous children’s book as selected by the committee. This event, as well as funds raised through the event, is used to expand children’s literacy programs in our area and the Denise McCoy Scholarship.

The Denise McCoy Legacy Award ceremony coincides with National Children’s Book Week. Events include readings of the award-winning book at local schools, book signings at local independent bookstores, and the kickoff of the "Albany Children's Book Festival”.
